Formerly called Rhodesia, Zimbabwe lies in a region of savannah-covered plains (the maximum altitude is 2,558 metres) with very fertile soil. Zimbabwe means great house of stone, and it's not for nothing that it's also known on the continent as the country of sculptors, known for their creativity in using recyclable materials.

Zimbabwe concentrates some of the world's most impressive landscapes in its small territory (on an African scale): the mythical Victoria Falls, discovered in 1855 by Dr Livingstone and which still exert a strong influence on the country. Livingstone and which still exert the same fascination a century and a half later; the beauty of the inviolable landscapes of the Hwange, Matusadona or Mana Pools parks; the virginity of the Great Lakes where wildlife gathers by the thousands and the greatness of the Bantu civilisation in Great Zimbabwe (11th century), testimony to the rise of a kingdom that encompassed the societies not only of present-day Zimbabwe, but also of Mozambique, Botswana and South Africa.

An ideal destination for thrill-seekers: rafting in the Zambezi gorges, bungee jumping at Victoria Falls, 4x4 safaris, on foot, but also by canoe or speedboat...
