Polynesia is a sub-region of Oceania, made up of more than 1,000 islands spread across the central and southern Pacific Ocean. Shaped like a triangle, Polynesia is made up of volcanic and coral islands. The most common circumscription includes New Zealand, the Cook Islands, Tonga, Hawaii, Tuvalu, Samoa, Easter Island and the Marquesas Islands, among other territories.

French Polynesia, an overseas region of France, covers 118 islands and stretches for more than 2,000 kilometres. Divided into the Austral, Gambier, Marquesas, Society and Tuamotu archipelagos, it is known for its coral-fringed lagoons and overwater bungalow hotels. The islands are characterised by black and white sand beaches, mountains, remote wilderness areas and imposing waterfalls.
