Poland is a country of great architectural diversity. With countless historical monuments to visit, you'll find over 900 castles and palaces and 16 sites recognised by UNESCO. Among the country's tourist attractions are the art nouveau historic centres of Poznan and Wroclaw. In Krakow, Wawel Castle, built in the 14th century, towers over the medieval old town. Nearby is the memorial to the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, as well as the vast Wieliczka Salt Mine, with its underground halls and tunnels. The cosmopolitan and dynamic capital Warsaw, the city of Chopin's quiet notes and Copernicus' avant-garde ideas, proudly rising from the ashes. The harbour city of Gdansk, the architecture of Torún, the Tatra Mountains and the Masurian Great Lakes region.
